Description

This course introduces X-Ray diffraction as a method for the determination of crystal structures. Through lectures and tutorials, it covers Bragg’s Law, the use of the reciprocal space and the structure factor to interpret XRD patterns. A short presentation of experimental set-ups is also included.

Objectives

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe matter-radiation interactions
  • Explain scattering and diffraction mechanisms
  • Define Bragg’s Law
  • Define the reciprocal space and calculate its lattice parameters
  • Calculate diffraction angles using Bragg’s law and the reciprocal space
  • Define and calculate the structure factor for a crystalline compound
