2022, UPPA was awarded the “Welcome to France” label

For institutions, the "Bienvenue en France" label is a fundamental part of quality management. It serves to measure, describe, and promote the facilities and initiatives that accommodate and benefit international students.

Further Summer/Winter Schools will be scheduled throughout the 2022-2023 academic year.

  1. In partnership with the festival "Un aller-retour dans le Noir", the UPPA proposes the second edition of a thematic school dedicated to the discovery of detective novels in Romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian). 

    The thematic school will take place over five days and will allow students to tackle theoretical aspects linked to crime novels in Romance languages (conferences and round tables led by specialists in the genre) and to take part in the various activities programmed as part of the "Un aller-retour dans le Noir" festival, which will be celebrating its 13th edition (meetings with writers, debates, public readings, film screenings).

Over the last two decades, ecological themes and environmental issues have become increasingly important in all areas of artistic creation, as demonstrated, for example, by the latest edition of "La littorale", the Anglet contemporary art biennal (August 7 - October 31, 2021). In parallel to the collective awareness of the extent of the contemporary ecological crisis, human and social sciences have been led to rethink the relationship between human beings and their environment, and to take the measure of the epistemological, political, social and aesthetic disruptions involved. New disciplines have emerged, such as environmental aesthetics, history and sociology, anthropology of nature, ecosophy, human ecology and eco-criticism.

    The intensive training proposed by the thematic school "Arts, environment and ecology" will aim the evaluation of the theoretical advances made in these various disciplinary fields, and their relevance in the elaboration of new tools of analysis and interpretative models for ecological artistic proposals. But it will also take into account the singularity of cultural and artistic initiatives developed, on a local level, by institutions, collectives, associations involved in the defense of the environment and in the promotion of ecological arts.

  3. In today's world, many political tensions and conflicts are leading to increased migration. These migrations impact on all strata of society, and as a result many writers find themselves far from their native country and their mother tongue. Many of them become plurilingual writers, choosing the idiom of the host country as a means of expression, but literary plurilingualism can also be the result of a purely aesthetic choice.

    During the previous BIP on Plurilingual Romance Language Authors in April 2022 and the subsequent scientific meetings of the research network, two aspects of this literary plurilingual writing emerged: on the one hand, free aesthetic choice and, on the other, the numerous political constraints. It is therefore around these two poles that the new BIP will be articulated to allow - on a scientific level - to dig deeper into this field of investigation.

    In the context of European citizenship and UNITA, a multilingual experience is undoubtedly a formative and valuable experience; this BIP will allow master's and doctoral students from at least six nations to meet and exchange on the issues of pluri- and multilingualism for a high intensity intercultural exchange, while having the possibility to analyse fundamental aspects of it. As this BIP is co-organised by several partners of the UNITA alliance, it becomes obvious to focus on Romance languages.

  4. This summer school will allow its participants to (re)discover Pyrenean landscapes in the light of Mediaeval works. It will include :

    • the presentation of literary excerpts,
    • the comparison of different points of view on the legend of Roland,
    • the transcription and translation of excerpts from Mediaeval manuscripts/texts,
    • reading out or singing Mediaeval texts.

    These activities will at least in part take place while walking together within the Pyrenean landscape, in the true spirit of the Randopat series of summer/winter schools.

  5. The goal of this summer school is to invite the best scientific experts in Green IT of the moment to share the state of knowledge and practice with those who will build the sustainable digital world of tomorrow.

    The school invites various speakers (lecturers, professors, researchers and professionals), recognized in the field of sustainable computing, Green IT, energy (hardware and software) and data centers and the cloud. These experts come from French and European institutes, associations and companies.

  6. University of Pau and Pays de l'Adour, in collaboration with its UNITA partners, offers a Summer School on mutual understanding of Romance languages. During this week, participants will be immersed in Romance languages and will discover French and Occitan culture. This unique experience will allow students from UNITA partner universities to learn to understand and make themselves understood, while speaking their own language.

    What is intercompréhension?

    Intercomprehension is a way of communicating based on the similarities between languages of a same family. Thus, each person expresses himself or herself in his or her own language and can understand the others.

    The aim of this summer school is to develop skills in comprehension, production, and interaction, both written and oral, in communicative situations in intercomprehension, particularly in specialized fields (intercomprehension on specific objectives).

  7. The IFJD-Institut Joinet has been organising since 2014 in Baigorri an annual, international event, open to all and offering the possibility of exchanging experiences and knowledge. This summer programme is dedicated to the defence of human rights and the most vulnerable populations in post-conflict and post-dictatorship contexts. It is part of the IFJD's actions around the world. The Summer school is intended for students and professionals from all over the world to enrich the skills they use or will use in the field, particularly to accompany victims. The courses take place all day at the Oronozia and each year welcome more than 50 participants from all around the world.

    The 2023 edition of our summer programme is intended to be a further step in the development of this international and cultural human rights week. We want to continue to make innovative knowledge available to the widest possible audience and to organise spaces for exchange between students, witnesses, actors and researchers on a very important issue.

  8. “Smart cities” is a rapidly growing concept both in research and in public policy practices. It considered the main solution enabling cities to better address key societal challenges such as energy transition, mobility, transport and social innovation.

    During this summer school, participants will study «Smart Cities" through specific themes such as innovation public governance, tomorrow’s digital city (artificial intelligence), traffic management and intelligent transport or even the innovation in the building sector.

    This summer school, aimed at  Master's students, Doctoral students, professionals from the private and public sector, will be an opportunity to discuss with  international professors, researchers and experts from local and regional authorities.

  9. This is an intensive 60-hour French course, intended for a foreign audience who will be immerged in the language. The lessons are designed for learners of all levels; they are given on campus, near the historic heart of the city of Pau. The teachers are state graduates and work at the UPPA. They are professionals of French as a Foreign Language and they include their teaching with an action-oriented perspective.
