This introductory course provides students with a comprehensive overview, covering both the geopolitical and administrative context of Romania and the fundamental linguistic aspects of the Romanian language.

This course looks at Romania’s linguistic heritage, geographical context, and evolution within the wider framework of global languages. You will learn how Romania’s location in Eastern Europe has influenced its language and culture, trace the language’s roots back to the Indo-European macrofamily, and follow its development within the Romance language family, alongside siblings such as French, Spanish, and Italian.

You will also learn how Romanians refer to themselves and how others have named them throughout history, as well as present trends such as its adaptability and openness to outside influences, which has made it „a hospitable language".
