Description

GOALS OF THIS COURSE

  • To help you improve your communicative English skills,
  • To sharpen your professional communication skills through various styles of public speaking practice,
  • To give you the opportunity to practice your English skills and gain confidence in this language. 

In this course, we will focus on international communication and scientific dissemination skills. At a Master’s level you are expected to be able to design and carry out research projects in both the professional and academic spheres. It is equally important that you can communicate your skills and knowledge in a professional and technical manner. For this reason, this course heavily relies practicing your presentation skills.

 Additionally, we will practice reading, listening, speaking, and writing in English since much of the research at this level is published and presented at international conferences. We will also work on refining your critical reading and listening comprehension skills with up-to-date materials from popular science and technical texts, academic articles, videos, etc. in the green energy field. You will improve your comprehension, fluency, and confidence in spoken and written English through individual practice and regular participation in discussions, presentations, and group work.

To accomplish the objectives of this course, you will perform within the following areas: 

Reading 

  • Read and analyze articles and texts related to your area of studies, 
  • Develop and refine various academic reading strategies such as the prediction of topics, main idea identification, etc, 
  • Recognize sentence parts to improve reading comprehension of difficult passages. 

Listening

  • Listen to videos and lectures, take relevant notes, pay attention to pronunciation, 
  • Integrate orally provided information into responses on quizzes and exams,
  • Practice listening skills with topics relevant to your area of studies, 
  • Practice note taking in all phases of the course including listening activities.  

General Writing

  • Practice writing effective and comprehensive responses to different quiz and essay questions in various styles that reflect your understanding of the academic content presented. 

Speaking

  • Participate in class discussions and group work using appropriate communication skills, 
  • Increase knowledge of the structure of academic presentations and delivery skills,
  • Orally present short and medium length content, both individually and in groups, with or without visual support,
  • Explain your point of view and defend your ideas through debates and class discussions. 

 Vocabulary + Grammar

  • Increase overall academic vocabulary and specific words relevant to your field,
  • Guess advanced academic vocabulary meaning from context,
  • Every class is a vocabulary class. Review vocabulary lists weekly,
  • Polish your grammar by observing how it is used in context, analyzing sentences, and completing short grammar exercises (on a needed basis). 

FORMAT

You will be tested mainly on the development of your communication, presentation and language skills. Class activities will focus on listening, reading, and informal/formal speaking to understand, learn, remember, and orally present information from both written and spoken materials. In addition, and to help you improve your grammar and writing, we will have a mini-grammar lesson and some writing exercises from time to time. 

Gradual Release of Responsibility – This means that I will lead the first part of the course, but as the semester goes on, you will be in charge of presenting some of the class content to your classmates. I will gradually release the responsibility of your learning to YOU.

Objectifs

At the end of this course, you will be able to :

  • Make a clear, prepared presentation, giving reasons for and against a particular point of view and presenting the advantages and disadvantages of various options,
  • Communicate with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes natural interaction with a native speaker possible,
  • Write a resume and cover letter related to one's field of specialization in a clear and detailed manner,
  • Be able to express yourself in writing on various academic topics and be able to summarize in writing/video document.

  • Participation grade : Mini-TOIEC is an opportunity for students to comprehend their potential score for an official TOEIC test.
  • Mid-Term : 

- Write Professional Business Email : Students increase their professionalism and employability skills.

- Video CV is an opportunity for students to practice their hire-ability skills and be prepared for future opportunities.

- Final Oral Exam : Performance Review : Individual Performance Review will be graded for preparedness and professionalism as well as English language and communication ability.

NOTE: Missed quizzes and tests cannot be made up without a valid, documented justification. You must contact the student services office within 3 days of your absence, send them your documents, and set up a date with your teacher to submit your work or retake the quiz/test you missed.
